Evolution

When NIIT Foundation (NF) started in 2005, the mandate to reach the unreached, uncared and unattended for ensuring inclusive development in India already existed. However, the starting point of the process was still unclear. It was also important for us to ensure that the initiatives were scalable and sustainable by design.

We explored how various NGOs, the corporate sector and the government approached social development. While we wanted to stay with Education and Training as the mainstay of our initiatives, we identified areas that had a crying need and could substantially be addressed by us. These we identified as:

  1. Employability training for graduates in rural and semi-rural areas.
  2. Livelihood training for youth in urban slums.
  3. Better training in IT and IT-enabled areas for various not-for-profit organizations across the country.

We are implementing various prototypes with the intent to build scalable and sustainable models. At the same time, we are continuing to expand our areas of impact as we collaborate with CSR in the corporate sector, NGOs and funding organizations.
