Two eighth graders, Varun Srivastava a student of N.K. Bagrodia Public School and his friend Mayank Pabbi from D.P.S. Gurgaon, asked us if they could take a volunteer session with Career Development Centre students at Uttam Nagar.
Our answer came unprepared “Oh sure! Why not, ummmm…. maybe you can bring some games and have a play session.” But the duo responded affirmatively that they want their session to be fun 'and' educating so they suggested we leave the plan to them!
Glad they did not read our nervousness about the plan.
On the D-day, the duo took over the class like experts! They divided the class in two groups and started the activity. Each of team was requested to talk in English, submit 5 questions of Science, English, Math or Retail for the other team and give their introduction with an adjective which they thought describes them best.
Some introductions turned into jokes like ‘Gorgeous Gaurav’ and received a lot of leg pulling. As the quiz started, Mayank and Varun only orchestrated their teams’ responses while our CDC students did all the talking.
No inhibitions, just some kids at play. It turned out to be a session that students did not want to end!
Some feedback responses were "They are younger than us, so we talked in English like they did, no grown up to judge us."
"It made us confident that we could also conduct a class if kids younger than us can."
"Next time I am going to bring a list of question prepared from home. Next time we will win!"
Varun's team won, but what Varun and Mayank don't know is that their spirits and desire to make a difference makes both of them winners.
Well done you both, we will look forward to more such sessions!
